Taxi driver knifed, hospitalized in uptown New West police incident

Drivers are asked to avoid the area.

A taxi driver was wounded with a knife and taken to hospital after a police incident in uptown New Westminster earlier this afternoon, the Record has learned.

The incident hit social media after witness reports of a taxi driving erratically along Sixth Street and hitting cars along the way.

Amrik Mahil at Royal City Taxi told the Record he had only received a few details so far but said a man with a knife had gotten into a taxi. As of this moment, he said, the taxi driver is in hospital but was expected to be OK.

New Westminster police officers are on scene, and some roads have been closed.

Sixth Street has been closed from Princess to Hamilton, and Seventh Avenue is closed from Fifth to Eighth streets.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area.

Police were able to box in the cab at the intersection of Sixth Street and Seventh Avenue, one witness told the Record.

A Reddit thread about the incident reported the driver of the cab was "screaming with rage" and that police had their guns out. Another Twitter user captured the mayhem on the road.

The exact sequence of events is not yet known, but the Record has reached out to the New Westminster Police Department for further details.

More to come.
